Challenges with foreign language in internationalisation at home and virtual exchanges: concerns and possibilities

Recently, there has been a growing interest in the internationalisation of Brazilian universities, especially in the at-home modality, through virtual exchange (Freire Júnior, Massini-Cagliari; Putti, 2020; Souza; Freire Júnior, 2024). This scenario motivates us to study the Brazilian Virtual Exchange (BRaVE) program, in the context of the São Paulo State University (Unesp), where Brazilian students learn collaboratively online with peers from partner foreign institutions, in undergraduate/graduate courses. Through a qualitative methodology (Paiva, 2019), our objectives are: (1) discussing the challenges with the Foreign Language (FL) in internationalization at home and virtual exchanges; (2) presenting possibilities for facing the challenges in FL in this context. Our secondary data (Paiva, 2019) were collected through a virtual exchange evaluation questionnaire which was applied to students who participated in the program in the second semester of 2020. Considering content analysis (Bardin, 1977; Franco, 2005), we highlight the challenges related to FL proficiency in virtual exchange communications in programs such as BRaVE. We also highlight the importance of actions that aim to reduce these difficulties, by presenting a proposal in three moments (before, during, and after the virtual exchange), which reaffirms the need for and the importance of applied linguists in the making of language and internationalization policies of Higher Education Institutions.
