Engaged narrative of the 1930s: general notes and voices from the South

Abstract

This article starts from some general features found in the 1930 novel – the treatment of social and psychological vulnerability, the outline of distinctive features between the countryside and the city, the snapshots and the types of the poor countryside. Around these attributes, it seeks to extract the outline recognized as an engaged narrative under the dimension of a group of authors, some of them politically identified, who redimension the regional and regionalist extractions of their origins. Finally, it attempts to demonstrate the importance of Cyro Martins, Ivan Pedro de Martins and Pedro Wayne – three names from Rio Grande do Sul, who, inscribed in networks of exchanges and mutual influences, transfigure the regional narrative under the designations of proletarian utopia and neoregionalism of a critical and social nature.
