The concrete poetry of Augusto and Haroldo de Campos, and Décio Pignatari emerged at the end of the 1950s, a time of great creative effervescence in Brazil, in the fine arts as well as in literature and poetry, and which generated much interest abroad. The São Paulo Biennial, created in 1962, also brought foreigners to Brazil attracted by the energy of these avant-garde movements. Such is the case of two artists from the Hispanic world: the Spanish writer and artist Julio Plaza and the Mexican architect, curator, translator, and poet Héctor Olea. Both Plaza and Olea met the Campos brothers and established exchanges and joint projects. This article aims at exploring the role of these two “foreign travelers” and the view from the “outside” and the “inside” they developed as a result of their participation in the artistic and literary world of Brazil in the 1970s and 1980s.
