Resumo

This study analyses the semiotic choices that make up Doris Lessing’s autobiographical story – The Old Chief Mshlanga – to understand how the narrator’s perception of herself and the African continent changed as she grew closer to the local people. The text is part of a collection of African stories written to depict her early years in the continent, while drawing attention to the hardships imposed on the natives by the immigrants. Our choice resulted from our interest in the African people and from regarding Lessing as one of the main voices against the African discrimination. The study draws on Hasan’s (1989) approach to verbal art and Halliday’s (2004) Systemic-Functional Grammar (SFG). Also, though we carried out a comprehensive analysis of the whole story, we segmented the extracts from the text, due to limitations of space, following Hasan’s (1989) concept of Generic Structure Potential (GSP) for the Nursery Tale, which provides a better understanding of the significant attributes of the social activity.
